FELINE ACNE
Feline acne is when "blackheads" develop on your cat's chin. The cause is unknown but factors involved include stress, poor grooming, contact or atopic dermatitis, immunosuppression and excessive oil production.
Blackheads form on the chin causing it to appear dirty. The blackheads develop into small abscesses which burst and form crusts. Your cat may scratch and so cause hair loss and swelling. The skin may become infected. Feline acne can occur once or several times during your cat's life.
Our vets at Southern Cross may take scrapings to rule out other diseases. Treatment may include shampoos or washes, antibiotics and fatty acid supplementation. Changing to stainless steel bowls may help as some cats can be allergic to plastics.
